    Day 2: Seattle

Built between two lakes, where the North American continent starts splintering into the sea, Seattle is full of greenery. The lush trees and parks keep the locals connected with nature all year long. No wonder, then, that the city is nicknamed “The Emerald City”.

Spend your time in Seattle exploring the famous Pike Place Market, discovering independent coffee shops and hopping between the tiny craft breweries that make this city famous. Afterwards, head up the Space Needle for panoramic views over the harbour.

Another highlight of Seattle is the music scene. There are basement jazz clubs and grunge bars dotted throughout the city, so why not drop into one after dinner one night and see where the evening takes you?

    Included: 4* Hotel

Days 3 - 16: Campervan trip to Los Angeles

This morning, you’ll pick up your campervan and head off on your road trip. The price of this holiday is based on an Apollo Tourer RV, but if you want something bigger or more luxurious then, just ask.

From Seattle, you’ll head south and here are some recommendations for places to visit on your way to Los Angeles.

Leaving Seattle behind you, head out into beautiful Washington State. There are two gorgeous national parks nearby. First, visit mighty Mount Rainier before driving east to explore Olympic National Park, where lush mountains meet the windswept coastline. From here, you can keep heading south, stopping at the Hoh Rainforest to see the mossy wilderness before crossing into Oregon.

Our favourite stop in Oregon is Cannon Beach, where orange starfish cling to the huge rocks that appear at low tide. Next, you can turn inland to visit Portland, where you can try the famous voodoo doughnuts, enjoy farm-to-fork restaurants and sip on local craft beers. Afterwards, drive over to the Hood Valley to try some of Oregon’s best wine. Further south in Oregon, you can try some kayaking in Bend and gaze in awe at the magnificent Crater Lake National Park. All the while, you'll be getting closer to the California border.

Crossing into the Golden State, you can swing past quirky rural towns and vast redwood groves as you make your way down to San Francisco. Driving along the legendary Pacific Coast Highway, you can go whale-watching in Monterey or enjoy the sensational beaches and ocean vistas from Big Sur and Santa Barbara.

You’ll finish your trip in Los Angeles, where you can hike up to the Hollywood sign, ride the Ferris wheel on Santa Monica pier or watch the sunset on Huntington Beach. Finally, you'll return your campervan after a brilliant two-week road trip!

    Included: Campervan

    Day 17: Los Angeles

You can spend the day exploring the city. Head to Hollywood in search of your favourite stars on the Walk of Fame, people-watch to your heart’s content on Venice Beach and cycle along the oceanfront.

In the early afternoon, why not take a hike through the Hollywood Hills from the Griffith Observatory? From here, you’ll be rewarded with 365-degree views over the twinkling city as the sun sets. Afterwards, head to West Hollywood to find some local street food and cool cocktail bars.

    Included: 4* Hotel

    Day 18: Depart Los Angeles

Your Seattle to Los Angeles road trip finishes today, so you’ll make your own way to the airport in time for your flight home.

    Included: International flight

    Day 19: Arrive UK

    Weather

The Pacific Northwest is famously rainy. However, in reality, this area has cold snowy winters and mild pleasant summers. The coast can become suddenly foggy but when the sun shines you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better climate in the USA. There’s no need to plan for a constant deluge, but it is wise to keep an umbrella handy.

The coastal cities of central California sit on the edge of the Pacific Ocean. This gives them a changeable climate, where you can experience both summer and winter in the same day. Coastal breezes keep these cities cool and huge fog drifts can sweep over the San Francisco during the summer. Overall, winter is usually more reliable, with clear days and moderate temperatures. San Francisco is cooler than most areas of California. You are more likely to be too cold than too hot, so be sure to bring a jacket.

Southern California enjoys mild winters with a little rain on the coast but dry cold nights inland. The summer brings a rise in heat, tourist numbers and prices. However, rain is rare in summer, so it’s worth braving the crowds if you’re looking for consistently sunny weather.
